Getting Creative

Moving in slow-mo!

So, life is pretty much starting to feel normal again, since losing our friend last week.  It’s interesting how when someone leaves us, time seems to stand still, and we become more aware of the people we have in our lives, and decide to take time to love and appreciate them even more.

During that week, as I mentioned in my previous post, I stayed home with the kids and didn’t fret about when things were going to get done.  And, just as I’d suspected, things did get done, and actually were done quite well.  Here’s to releasing tension and trusting blindly, it works!

Also in that week, I decided that once my husband returns from India, I would take a night off from mommy-hood and stay in a hotel by myself.  This way I can catch up on work stuff, sleep without interruption, meditate, meditate, meditate, and do something I haven’t done in a very long time…draw.

I used to love drawing for hours on end when I was little.  I’d draw Disney characters, flowers, random people I made up in my mind, and random stuff around my room, like my super awesome stick of Teen Spirit.  With all the stresses of adulthood, I let drawing go by the wayside.  I am a graphic designer, but the need for speed (to turn a profit) made me turn to digital drawing tools and software, which pretty much took over traditional paper and pencils.

So yesterday, I checked into a hotel, then headed to the art supply shop, and picked up the basics; a sketch book, a sketching kit and a how-to book so I can brush up on my people-drawing skills. I have to admit, I’ve been avoiding the book, it’s so technical and pretty much makes me want to hide. I decided instead to try drawing images that already exist.

I’m hoping I don’t get in trouble for copying, but I’m not using it for anything besides practicing in my own sketch book, so I think it’s OK.  Anyway, I’ve falling in love with this blog, and she draws these adorable digi-stamps which she sells on her Etsy shop.  I decided to give it a shot, using this stamp as my inspiration, and here’s what I came up with:

Thank you Krista for inspiring me.  I hope to remember to take an hour or two each week to practice my drawing.  It’s such good therapy and you end up with something cute to brag about!
